Christmas in Florida

Christmas House

Plenty of decked out palm trees, lots of Flamingo Santas, and my favorite thing about Christmas in Florida, the Christmas Eve golf cart visitation. People in this little community decorate their circles (streets), in a competition, winner winning what, I don’t know, but it’s very festive and even the golf carts get dressed up in lights and decorations. The last year I came down to visit my mom and Chuck before moving here, we wrapped her up in a blanket and made the drive around every circle. It’s cool enough for a light jacket, yet mild, and carols fill the air as those who are taking a turn staying home to greet the golf cart travelers pass out candy, cookies, and occasional wassail. There are carols being played from someone’s stereo, and we all make a pass through the entirety of Corkscrew Woodlands, 15 circles, and 2 half circles.

Of course, we are used to the balmy weather, but in the years that I visited in winter, it was just short of blissful to be out and about lightly dressed enjoying Christmas decorations.

We are putting small lights around Chuck’s golf cart this year. We’ve hung the wreath, and our circle has been decorated with penguins and polar bears this year.

I’ve thought at times when I was younger, that Christmas is something that keeps this world from blowing up. I’m more cynical now. But for me the lovely stillness and beauty of Christmas Eve, with a pretty tree lit up, presents underneath,  the favorite carols played, and the baking done, all feel richly satisfying. Our family’s customs have changed over the years. I will always treasure the Christmases when my children were young, and my mom was still here with us, my grandparents, too. But I hope that new and wonderful traditions begin to establish themselves. As enjoyable as ever.

Wishing you all the happiest of holidays. Peace and beauty to all of you.
